Hanoverian ruler on England’s throne 1714 – 1837

For 123 years, the Electorate of Hanover and the Kingdom of Great Britain were united by a king. This historically significant epoch is the focus of the Niedersächsische Landesausstellung 2014, which can be seen in Hanover and Celle. The five-part exhibition provides the background for Angelica Kauffman’s client situation in London. Immediately after opening her studio in London, Kauffmann was commissioned by Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strehlitz, wife of King George III of England, to paint her portrait. This early connection to the English Royal family henceforth guided her career.
