Anne Seymour Damer – Sculpture and Society
The first woman sculptor of England, who also worked as a writer, is dedicated the first exhibition ever. In 1766, shortly after her arrival in London, Angelica Kauffman painted her colleague. Anne Damer was a friend of Horace Walpole, the builder of Strawberry Hill. He bequeathed her the estate where she spent many years of her life. The newly restored Strawberry Hill House is worth a visit. The neo-gothic architecture with its unusual equipment was the impetus for the ‘gothic revival’ in England. The appropriate reading is Richard Webbs entertaining book “Mrs. D. The Life of Anne Damer (1748-1828)”, Publisher Brewin Books, Studley 2013.
