Anmut und Aufklärung – Eine Sammlung von Druckgraphik nach Werken von Angelika Kauffmann (Grace and Enlightenment – A collection of prints after works by Angelica Kauffman)

Exhibition, 4.09.2016 – 20.11.2016

Winckelmann-Museum, Winckelmannstraße 36 – 38, 39576 Hansestadt Stendal

The leading engravers throughout Europe printed numerous works by Angelica Kauffman, mostly in the new technique of stipple engraving. A selection of these prints very much in demand were introduced in more detail in the exhibition.

In 1764 the 22-year-old Angelica Kauffman painted in Rome the eminent scholar and antiquarian Johann Joachim Winckelmann and was suddenly well known with the image. The portrait, which was distributed in countless reproductions, has significantly shaped our image of Winckelmann. The reproduction chain from the archetype to mass newspaper printing was presented for the first time in the context of this exhibition.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a richly illustrated catalog by Kauffman expert Bettina Baumgärtel with the following contributions:
– Prints after Angelica Kauffman – publisher, sales and marketing
– The Winckelmann portrait by Angelica Kauffman and its numerous reproductions
